When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle drove to their reception in a beautiful Jaguar E-Type there was no fanfare growl of a Jaguar XK engine, because this particular E-Type is called the Zero, and it is electric.
Of course, Zero stands for zero emissions designed by the Classic Department at Jaguar. The E-Type Zero actually weighs 80kg less than the original E-Type thanks to the removal of the classic running gear versus the weight of the new electric motor and batteries.
Thanks to that reduction in weight the car accelerates from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds with a range of about 160 miles. The dashboard is replaced with large touchscreens giving readouts about the efficiency of the drivetrain and adjustability of things like the throttle response. It also has modern phone connectivity.
The E-Type Zero is a one-off concept car valued at over £1 million but it is also a mobile test bed to pioneer this type of retro installation in any XK engined classic. Expect prices for a similar E-Type restored by Jaguar to be around £350,000. What better way to transport the world’s most famous newly weds in front of 2 billion people.
