Michael Caine drove a DB4 Volante in the original Italian Job, and ever since the Aston Volante has been the epitome of glamorous transportation. Beautiful, exclusive, hand-made and British, the DB11 now has a Volante version in the range, which is expected to account for around 50% of sales.
Launched in New York today (October 13th), the DB11 Volante is hailed as the return of the Ultimate Convertible Sports GT. Offered initially only with the 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS V8 engine, the DB11 Volante is built around the all-new bonded aluminium structure first seen in the DB11 Coupe.
Crucially, the all-new structure is claimed to be both stiffer and lighter than the outgoing DB9, meaning that the convertible should be less of a compromise in terms of driving dynamics compared with the coupe.
In the translation from coupe to convertible, the design has moved from being cutting edge to being simply drop-dead gorgeous. The floating roof is gone, replaced by a sleek 8-layer canvas job which operates in just 14 seconds and folds with class-leading compactness. It’s surely a good thing, and there is more than an echo of the recent limited Zagato Volante in the design.
One thing that has always made Aston Volantes a bit special is the availability of different convertible top colours to compliment the paint colour. The DB11 is no exception, with the beautifully tailored fabric hood available in a choice of bordeaux red, bang-up-to-date black silver or grey silver.
Engineered to be the most advanced and complete open-top Aston Martin ever built, styled to put its rivals in the shade and honed to achieve a fine balance of ride, handling, responsiveness and refinement, the DB11 Volante is dedicated to delivering a new dimension of driving pleasure.
Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer, said of the DB11 Volante: “For many of our customers, indeed many generations of Aston Martin customer, the Volante has always offered something very special: a unique combination of elegant style, innate sporting ability and sensory engagement that lifts it above other open-top cars. The new DB11 Volante captures those qualities perfectly and promises the kind of pleasure and enjoyment that can only come from driving an open-top Aston Martin”.
The first DB11 Volantes are due to be delivered in spring 2018, with prices from £159,900, £24,000 up on the V8 coupe.
