Bonhams Auctioneers have just set a new World Record for a McLaren F1. Potentially the most original example extant, F1 #044 was sold for $15,620,000 (including buyer’s premium) at the Quail Lodge Auction during Monterey Car Week. This is substantially higher than the reported private sale price of Rowan Atkinson’s F1 of $12+ million.
This also eclipses the 2015 sale price of $14,300,000, achieved by RM Sotheby’s in New York with the sale of the 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato Chassis no. DB4GT/0186/R (which at the time was a World record for a British car). Since then there have been three sales of British cars that have exceeded that, putting the McLaren F1 amongst three other British Cars ever sold at auction.
The top four British cars sold at Auction:
- 1959 Aston Martin DBR1/1 – $22,550,000 (RM Sotheby’s, 2017)
- 1956 Jaguar D-Type chassis number XKD 501 – $21.7 million (RM Sotheby’s, 2015)
- 1995 McLaren F1 Chassis no. 044 – $15.6 million (Bonhams, 2017)
- 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato DB4GT/0186/R – $14.3 million (RM Sotheby’s, 2015)
